Charlotte jumps Union Omaha for first after Fort Wayne ends the Owls’ league home unbeaten run
Union Omaha started Saturday on top of USL League One. By the end of the night it was second. Fort Wayne FC beat the Owls 1-0 at Morrison Stadium, and a few hours later the Charlotte Independence beat the New York Cosmos 3-0. That puts Charlotte on 63 points and Omaha on 61 in the league's standings, each with two games left. Omaha is now 19-7-4 (wins-losses-draws).
For supporters, the next home game at Morrison will be a playoff game. Omaha's last two regular-season games are both on the road. The club has already clinched a home playoff match, and its schedule lists a home playoff date of Friday, Oct. 30, with the time to be announced.
For the players, the loss changes the job. Going into Saturday, winning out would have guaranteed Omaha the Players' Shield. Now it doesn't.
How the night went
Fort Wayne's Taig Healy scored in the 25th minute. Fort Wayne played the rest of the game a man down after defender Aleksandar Vukovic was sent off for a second yellow card in the 70th minute, and still held on. Those minutes come from Fort Wayne's posts and ESPN's match data. Fort Wayne says the shutout was goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann's 10th clean sheet of the season, and the club says that leads the league. ESPN's box score lists attendance as 5,094.
The result ended Omaha's 26-match league home unbeaten run, a League One record. Fort Wayne "becomes the first team in over a year to leave Omaha with a win in league play," USL League One posted.
In Charlotte, the Independence led 3-0 at halftime on goals from Christopher Jaime, Joey Skinner and Souaibou Marou, and the score stayed there. The club's full-time post: "Jacks are back on top." The league said the win secures Charlotte a top-two finish.
Still on the table
None of the milestones the Owls were chasing fell on Saturday. All of them are still there:
Most wins in a season: one more win gives Omaha 20, the most in a League One regular season so far. Charlotte, now on 19 wins, could also reach 21.
Points record: the record is 65, set by Omaha's 2023 team, and breaking it takes wins in both remaining games.
100 all-time wins: Omaha has 98 League One regular-season wins. Two more would make it the first club to reach 100.
The home run counted league games only. Omaha lost 5-1 at home to Louisville City in the USL Cup in May.
What Omaha needs now
The Players' Shield goes to the team with the best regular-season record and brings home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Omaha won it in 2021, 2023 and 2024, and this would be its fourth in six seasons. If two teams finish level on points, the first tiebreaker is total wins. Both clubs have 19.
The math is simple:
If Charlotte wins both of its last two games, it wins the Shield. That would give it 69 points. Omaha's best possible finish is 67.
If Omaha wins both and Charlotte drops points even once, Omaha wins the Shield. Omaha would have 67 points and 21 wins. Charlotte's best result in that case is 67 points with 20 wins, and Omaha would win that tie on wins.
If Omaha drops points, it needs Charlotte to do worse. A win and a draw works only if Charlotte doesn't win either game. A win and a loss works only if Charlotte takes no more than one point. Without a win, Omaha would need two draws and two Charlotte losses, and even then the Shield would be decided on tiebreakers, starting with goal difference. Charlotte currently leads that +28 to +21, according to the league's standings.
The schedules don't help Omaha. It plays at Westchester SC on Oct. 17, then finishes at Forward Madison, which was third going into the weekend, on Oct. 24. Charlotte plays at Greenville Triumph on Oct. 17 and at Portland Hearts of Pine on Oct. 24, and both are already out of the playoff race.
So for Owls fans, Oct. 17 is about two scoreboards. Omaha needs a win at Westchester, and any points Charlotte drops at Greenville would help. If Charlotte wins and Omaha doesn't, Charlotte clinches the Shield that night.
What it means for Fort Wayne
For the visitors, it was a statement result. Fort Wayne is in its first professional season, came into the weekend holding the last playoff spot in eighth, and now has 45 points. "We're one step closer to clinching a playoff berth in our first season of professional soccer," the club posted after the match.
The two teams could meet again soon. Before the weekend, the league noted that if the standings held, Omaha would host Fort Wayne in the opening round of the playoffs. Saturday night changed the top of those standings.
