After suffering a 3-1 defeat in the first meeting between clubs on May 30th, Sunflower State FC responded in emphatic fashion Wednesday night, defeating Des Moines Menace 2-0 in Kansas City to even the season series.
The result sets up a decisive third meeting between the two sides on June 30th, with the season series now tied at one win apiece.
Des Moines controlled the opening chapter of the USL League Two rivalry, earning a 3-1 victory at home in front of their passionate supporters on May 30th. Four days later, however, Sunflower State delivered its response.
Leading the way was forward Crew Alvarez, who scored both goals in the victory for the sunnies to secure all three points.
Sunflower’s performance represented a significant turnaround from the first meeting. After conceding three goals in Des Moines, the club produced a disciplined defensive effort and held one of the league’s most recognizable organizations scoreless.
The victory not only provided Sunflower with an important 3 points in the standings but also ensured the head-to-head between the two Great Plains division teams remains undecided.
With each club now holding a victory over the other, attention turns to June 30th, when the two sides meet for the final time this regular season in Kansas City.
